Kelli Barr-Lyles, MA, IAT-CE-D, ICPE

Kelli Barr-Lyles, MA, IAT-CE-D, ICPE is a birth and death junkie.  She has been a certified Birth Doula and Childbirth Educator for the past 18 years and has been training Doulas and Childbirth Educators for the past 9 years.  She holds a BS in Psychology and an MA in Gerontology and is a Certified Counselor in Washington State.  Her counseling specialties lie in pregnancy/birth/postpartum and aging/death/grief.     She owns her own business where she brings all her passions together, working with individuals and families as they travel through life transitions.  She brings a quirky sense of humor to all of her work and feels incredibly blessed to be able to meet, and work with, the amazing people she meets day in and day out.  She is married with three sons.

Vonda Gates, RN, BSN, ICCE, ICBD, Hug Your Baby Certified Teacher, Mother Friendly RN

Vonda Gates has been a certified childbirth educator with ICEA since 1991. Vonda was one of the first 20 DONA certified birth doulas and has maintained that certification with ICEA for over 20 years. For many of her early career years, Thursday evening was spent at the local hospital, teaching a childbirth class. Currently, Vonda enjoys the talented women she meets as an approved trainer for the ICEA Childbirth Educator and Birth Doula program workshops. In 2015, Vonda received the ‘Outstanding ICEA Approved Trainer Award’. Vonda facilitates a childbirth class in her local Georgia classroom and online “live” with clients around the globe.


Michelle has been working in the birth world since 2003 as a childbirth educator, birth doula, postpartum doula, and breastfeeding counselor. In 2010 she started a nonprofit organization in her community with the goal of improving maternal and perinatal outcomes. Through her organization she offers childbirth education, and lactation support on a sliding scale, and helps pair families with birth and postpartum doulas. Michelle has been offering doula and educator trainings since 2011, and in her spare time she mentors the next generation of birth professionals, offers business and other workshops, serves as a board member for ICEA, and is the chair of the postpartum and mentorship programs.

In addition to being a certified childbirth educator, birth doula, and postpartum doula Michelle also has her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education, is a licensed massage therapist with advanced training in perinatal and infant massage, and is a certified hypnotherapist.

Tamela has had the honor and privilege of supporting more than 1,000 doctors, midwives, nurses, childbirth educators, doulas, lactation consultants, and yoga instructors start this rewarding birthing career. She has also helped hospitals develop and implement hospital-based doula programs.

Bonita Katz, BA, RN, CLC, ICCE, ICBD, IAT

Bonita has been a certified childbirth educator (ICCE) since 1993. She received her certification as an ICEA doula (ICBD) in 1997. In 2005 she became a registered nurse after completing coursework at Vanderbilt University. She completed advanced training in women’s health at both Vanderbilt and Frontier University. She has been training childbirth educators and birth doulas for ICEA since 2012. She revised the ICEA birth doula program in 2013 and updated it again in 2016. She is married and has six adult children.


Kathy King has a wealth of experience in the childbirth field. Currently and for 41 years, she has worked as a nurse in Labor/Birth, Mom/Baby, childbirth educator, and as a Lactation Consultant. She has worked with midwifery and obstetric practices in several different settings.

She has also developed and taught classes for all types of expectant families. Some of these include teen birth classes, baby care, breastfeeding classes, childbirth preparation, VBAC, sibling and parenting courses. Additionally, she’s mentored student educators and student nurses for decades.

Kathy became an ICEA Certified Childbirth Educator in 1986. In 2009, she became a national trainer for ICEA. She holds certifications as an Inpatient Obstetric Nurse and holds Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certifications from both AWHONN and NCC. Kathy then became a CLC, through the Health Children’s Project and went on to earn her IBCLC. She loves doing this work and feel it is an Outreach program as she believes is important to bring new educators into the field.

She’s been a speaker at state ICEA sharing day, national convention, and provided webinar for ICEA. She was delighted to complete a workshop in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in August 2019.

Dena Marchiony

Dena has been a childbirth educator for 26 years and has worked in Hospital, community and private settings. She authored The MotherSource Pregnancy Resource Directory“Joy and Sleepfilled Nights” a promotional brochure for Schwarz Pharma, and was a contributing author for the 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012 editions of Expectant Mothers Guide.

Dena was originally certified in The Bradley Method, has a Level 1 Certification in “Birthing From Within”, and is currently certified by ICEA (International Childbirth Education Association) and Lamaze. She has been certified as a  MotherWell Pregnancy Fitness instructor and is a Prenatal Yoga Instructor. She is a certified ICEA/ DONA Birth Doula, lactation support person, and is a Trainer for ICEA (teaching new childbirth educators their craft). She integrates all methods and adds zen meditation, affirmation, and deep relaxation techniques to re-frame fear about childbirth and instill confidence.

Joni Parthemer

Joni holds a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction degree and is both a Master Trainer and Education Director for the Bringing Baby Home Program. She also holds certification as a Childbirth Educator and International Childbirth Association Approved Trainer. Joni is a faculty member at the Simkin Center for Allied Birth Professions at Bastyr University as well as a Birth and Family Educator at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, WA.

She has developed, published and implemented a variety of training materials for educators interested in providing support and growth programs for families. She is married and the mother of two children.

Stacey Scarborough, IAT, ICCE, CLE, AdvCD, PCD, BDT(DONA)

Stacey Scarborough has been a certified Childbirth Educator since 1994. Her motto is “Education is empowerment”.  She loves to help others learn how to educate themselves for their birth experience with evidence based information, and has a passion for teaching. She has been an educator for the two major hospitals in San Diego,  CA. and is passionate to train new educators for this work. Besides San Diego, she also trains in Orange County and Spokane/Northern Idaho.  She is also a Birth Doula trainer for DONA, International, a CLE, and a certified Birth and Postpartum Doula.
