Experienced/Transferring Pathway

Steps to Transfer to an ICEA Approved Trainer (IAT)

  1. IAT candidate will submit the following to the ICEA Main Office. Enrollment application fee will be processed upon receipt of application, all other payments will only be processed if the candidate is approved by the ICEA Board of Directors.
    1. Resume/CV
    2. Verification of being an approved trainer for 3+ years(certificate of being a trainer, sign in sheet for workshops taught, etc.) and actively training for a minimum of 2 years.
    3. Submit your Enrollment Application form online or click here to mail in your application.
    4. Payment of $350.00 per program area
    5. ICEA Approved Trainer (IAT) Commitment Agreement
  1. IAT candidate must study and review the IAT PowerPoint or PDF
  2. After receipt of application, the IAT candidate’s curriculum will be reviewed. Upon approval of their qualifications and curriculum, the candidate will interview with the President, President-Elect, and possibly another member of the IAT Committee.
  3. Following a successful interview, the IAT Committee will bring a recommendation to the Board. Once Board approval is obtained the IAT candidate will sign the initial contract and pay the remaining $350 fee per program area. IAT status is granted once board approval is granted, the contract is signed, and all fees are paid.

Qualifications to Become an ICEA Approved Trainer (IAT)

  1. Supports the ICEA mission, vision, core values, philosophy, and goals
  2. Has attended the ICEA workshop(s) they will be teaching (Childbirth Educator, Birth Doula, Postpartum Doula)
  3. Maintains ICEA certification in program area (Childbirth Educator, Birth Doula, Postpartum Doula) they will be teaching (minimum of 3 years)
  4. Willingness and ability to teach at least one (1) ICEA Workshop per year in each program area
  5. Complies with the International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes
  6. Has Professional Continuing Education in the named areas:
    1. 20 completed hours Breastfeeding Continuing education meeting the BFHI Global Criteria (provide contact hours)
      1. ICEA Early Lactation Care Workshop
      2. IBCLCs and CLCs may submit current certification
      3. La Leche Leaders may submit contact hours
    2. Four hours minimum Perinatal Emotional Health (provide contact hours)
  7. Complete 10 ICEA position papers (read and take corresponding post tests)
  8. Purchase the books on the referenced reading list (Childbirth Educator, Birth Doula, Postpartum Doula)
  9. Submit the following for for ICEA contact hour approval:
    1. The two-day workshop schedule
    2. The workshop lesson plan, including:
      – The ICEA Program objectives to be covered each hour
      – The required Nursing CE objectives to be covered
      – The learning activities to be used
      – The PowerPoint/media to be used, with the ICEA logo on each slide
      – All workshop handouts to be used
  10. Must attend at least one ICEA Conference within four years of acceptance as an ICEA IAT

The initial IAT start fee is $450.00 for a 3 year term for each program area.  At the conclusion of that term, the IAT will be asked to renew their commitment every 3 years thereafter at a cost of $250.00 per program area

Requirements for RE-Approval of an ICEA Approved Trainer:

  1. Complete re-approval application with accompanying fees per program area
  2. Continue active certification by ICEA in the area of the workshop(s) being taught.
  3. Consistently submitted to the ICEA Main Office no later than four weeks following the completion of their workshop:
    1. A list of workshop attendees’ names, addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses.
    2. Workshop evaluations form each attendee.
    3. The IAT’s Summary Evaluation Form
  4. Completed professional continuing education in the named areas:
    1. Four hours Breastfeeding continuing education meeting the BFHI Global Criteria (provide contact hours)
      1. IBCLCs and CLCs may submit current certification
      2. LaLeche Leaders may submit contact hours
    2. Four hour minimum Perinatal Emotional Health (provide contact hours)
  5. Adheres to the additional topics outlined in the ICEA Approved Trainer Commitment Agreement
  6. Submit a letter stating the IAT’s desire to continue as an ICEA Approved Trainer
  7. Attend at least one ICEA or approved conference every three years
  8. Consistently held a minimum of one workshop per year for each program area
